Equine Science 2 is designed to teach therapeutic riding techniques and practical experience related to working with special needs students and horses. Instruction emphasizes knowledge and understanding of how horses think and react to situations and the appropriate response to these reactions. Students will learn to work with special needs students and horses in order to develop an understanding of therapeutic riding. 

Typical instruction include hands- on experiences in advanced horsemanship and effective communication with special needs students in order for them to develop physical, mental and social skills.

 

 

There are no prerequisites required for this course.
There are no fees associated with this course.

Upon completion of the Equine Science Two course, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate horsemanship safety
  • Work with special needs students and teach them basic horsemanship skills
  • Explain the benefits of therapeutic riding
  • Utilize protective behaviors around horses
  • Assist in coaching Special Olympic Riders 
  • Recognize signs of a concussion
  • Recognize the signs of heat stress
  • Exercise horses to keep them in shape for the special Olympic riders
  • Demonstrate advanced horse care
