Outdoor Recreation

Course Number: 5602ORCW

The Outdoor Recreation course is a combination of subject matter and planned learning experiences on the principles involved in outdoor safety, planning outdoor recreational activities, designing parks and special use areas, and outdoor recreational resources on public lands.  Instruction also emphasizes such factors as the establishment, management, and operation of land for recreational purposes.  Typical learning activities include hunter and boater education; ATV safety; survival and first aid techniques; planning, designing and maintaining an outdoor recreational area; and participating in personal and community leadership development activities; planning and implementing a relevant school-to-work transition experience; and participating in FFA activities.

  • Unit A   Developing Leadership Skills in Agriculture

    Lesson 1. Planning and Organizing an FFA Meeting

    Student Learning Objectives:. Instruction in this lesson should result in students achieving the following objectives:

    1. Explain how to plan a meeting and develop the order of business.
    2. Describe how to set up the meeting room.
    3. Explain the parliamentary procedure used in an FFA meeting.

     

    Lesson 2. Developing an Awareness for Your Community

    Student Learning Objectives:. Instruction in this lesson should result in students achieving the following objectives:

    1. Describe the meaning and importance of community service.
    2. List and identify community service organizations.
    3. Explain how FFA members can be involved with community

        improvement and development.                          

     

    Lesson 3. State FFA Degree

    Student Learning Objectives:. Instruction in this lesson should result in students achieving the following objectives:

    1. List the requirements for the State FFA Degree.
    2. Explain how a FFA member can obtain the State FFA Degree.

     

    Unit B.  Supervised Experience in Agriculture

                                    Lesson 1: Careers in Outdoor Recreation

    Student Learning Objectives. Instruction in this lesson should result in students achieving the following objectives:

    1. Describe the opportunities in an outdoor recreation career.

                                   

                                    Lesson 2. Determining the Benefits of an SAE

    Student Learning Objectives. Instruction in this lesson should result in students achieving the following objectives:

    1. Explain the importance of goals and career ladders.
    2. Define supervised agricultural experience.
    3. Explain the benefits of supervised agricultural experience programs.

     

                                    Lesson 3. Determining the Kinds of SAE

    Student Learning Objectives. Instruction in this lesson should result in students achieving the following objectives:

    1. Explain the difference between entrepreneurship and placement SAEs.
    2. Describe research and experimentation SAEs and exploratory SAEs.
    3. Explain the characteristics of a good SAE program and student responsibilities.

     

                                    Lesson 4. Researching Possible SAE Programs

    Student Learning Objectives. Instruction in this lesson should result in students achieving the following objectives:

    1. Identify career interest areas in agriculture.
    2. Identify skills needed for career success.
    3. Explain opportunities for SAE programs.

     

                                    Lesson 5. Planning Your SAE Program

    Student Learning Objectives. Instruction in this lesson should result in students achieving the following objectives:

    1. Identify the steps in planning an SAE Program.
    2. Identify the parts of an annual SAE program plan.
    3. Discuss the function of a training plan and /or agreement in an SAE program

     

    Lesson 6. Implementing SAE Programs

    Student Learning Objectives. Instruction in this lesson should result in students achieving the following objectives:

    1. Discuss the importance of keeping records on an SAE program.
    2. Explain the types of financial records needed to support achosen SAE program.
    3. Identify standards to follow in keeping records on an SAE program.

     

    Unit C:  Outdoor Safety

                                   

                                    Lesson 1:  Hunter Education

    Student Learning Objectives. Instruction in this lesson should result in students achieving the following objectives:

    1. Describe hunting as a sport.
    2. Explain the kinds of firearms used in hunting.
    3. Discuss hunter responsibility.
    4. Identify ways to hunt with good ethics.
    5. Discuss state and federal regulated hunting procedures.
    6. Identify gun laws.

     

                                    Lesson 2:  Fishing Education

    Student Learning Objectives. Instruction in this lesson should result in students achieving the following objectives:

    1. Explain sport fishing.
    2. Discuss commercial fishing.
    3. Discuss sport fishing regulations.
    4. Describe sport fishing safety.
    5. Identify common equipment used in recreational fishing.

     

                                    Lesson 3:  Boater Safety

    Student Learning Objectives. Instruction in this lesson should result in students achieving the following objectives:

    1. Discuss safety regulations that apply to boating.
    2. Discuss the use PFD.
    3. Discuss PWC safety.
    4. List and describe the parts of a boat.
    5. Explain the use of lights and different buoys.

     

                                    Lesson 4:  ATV Safety

    Student Learning Objectives. Instruction in this lesson should result in students achieving the following objectives:

    1. Discuss safety regulations that apply to ATV’s.
    2. Discuss the proper equipment to wear when ridding an ATV.
    3. Demonstrate the proper way to ride an ATV.

     

                                    Lesson 5:  Survival and Basic First Aid

    Student Learning Objectives. Instruction in this lesson should result in students achieving the following objectives:

    1. Discuss Basic survival techniques.
    2. Discuss basic first aid techniques.
    3. Discuss the proper ways to start a fire.
    4. List ways to prevent hypothermia.

     

    Unit D:  Outdoor Recreation Resources

                                   

                                    Lesson 1:  Recreation on Public Lands.

    1. Discuss the recreational possibilities on public lands.
    2. Explain the federal government’s main natural resource and recreational programs.
    3. Explain how our public lands are misused and abused.
    4. Discuss the National Park System.

    6. Discuss the National Trail System.
    7. Discuss the State and Local recreational systems

     

    Unit E:  Planning Parks for People

    6. Discuss what considerations should be taken for persons with disabilities in park planning
