- Returning Forms (10%): You are to determine your service learning site within the first week of each semester with the assistance of your SL Instructor. You will submit the required forms to Dr. Dennis before reporting to your site. If a completed form has not been returned before Friday, August 23, 2019, you will be removed from the course.
- Goals Sheet (10%): This is a service based course. You should have goals in mind based on your participation in Service Learning. In the first week of Service Learning, you will work with your SL Supervisor to develop three semester goals you will work to accomplish. These are goals your Service Learning responsibilities and task should be centered around and may help you with a specific service project, future career, interest, etc. These will be part of your SL Supervisor’s nine week evaluation. Please submit these via email (ddennis@g.oconee.k12.sc.us) by or before Friday, September 6, 2019.
- Time Sheet (30%): Be sure to have the time sheet signed on a daily basis. I will ask for these randomly during the semester. This is your only proof of attendance and of being on time and staying the entire time. DO NOT SIGN MORE THAN ONE DAY AT A TIME AND DO NOT ASK YOUR SUPERVISOR TO DO SO. Every day of the semester should be listed on the timesheet. If you don’t go, write in the reason you didn’t go. Arrival and departure times must be actual times, not estimated. Don’t write in the times BEFORE they occur. Show your Bobcat Pride by being punctual and dependable each day. Time sheets must be turned in EACH nine weeks. At the end of first nine weeks, you will turn in your timesheet to guidance (due date is on the bottom of the timesheet) and pick-up the next semester’s timesheet.
- Letter of Recommendation from SL Supervisor (30%): You are required to have your SL Supervisor submit a letter of recommendation for you near the end of EACH nine weeks. The letter must address your attendance, dependability, attitude, appropriate dress, quality of service, comments regarding the grade your supervisor feels you deserve, and whether you are on track to meet your semester SL goals. Be sure to get this done in a timely manner and either you submit it to Dr. Dennis or have your SL Supervisor submit it via email (ddennis@g.oconee.k12.sc.us). These are due: October 4th (first nine weeks), and December 13th (second nine weeks).
Show your BOBCAT PRIDE by being Prepared, Responsible and Respectful to give your supervisor plenty of time to complete the letter PRIOR to the deadline. We expect to hear great reports of your Integrity and high quality serviceeverywhere from every service learning supervisor.
- Final Project (20%): At the end of the semester, you will complete a Final Project in which you will share your experiences and the knowledge gained over the course of the semester. This project will be completed and due before you leave for break at the end of the year and will need to include: your site, why you selected this site, your SL Supervisor, your three semester goals, how you worked to meet these goals, your specific experiences and tasks completed, and your “take-aways” for how this class has impacted you or prepared you for the future. This is due by: Friday, December 20th, 2019
Responsibilities: The goal of this course is to allow you to have an authentic experience out in the world, and so we would like you to leave the walls of SHS if you are at all able. It is your responsibility to work while at your site. Be industrious and have a good attitude. Take the initiative to get things done. You are expected to take this class very seriously. It is not a play period. This includes dressing appropriately. No short shorts, short skirts, low cut blouses, or bare midriffs allowed. Baggy pants and baseball caps are not appropriate either. In addition, you will have to adhere to the dress code of the employees who work at your site. Unannounced visits may be made to see that you are being a responsible worker and a positive reflection of Seneca High School. Strive for excellence and demonstrate the BOBCAT WAY!
Problems or Concerns at your Service Site: Report any changes in supervisors or any concerns you have at your site immediately to Dr. Dennis.
Signing In / Signing Out: Failure to sign in or sign out on time will result in an absence. You must clear up attendance matters with Dr. Dennis and Mrs. Holliday immediately. Do not sign for anyone else and do not ask anyone to sign for you. This will result in immediate removal from the class. It is your responsibility to scan in and out with Mrs. Holliday. Leaving without scanning out will be treated as cutting class.
Attendance: This is a service class. You cannot provide service if you are not present. Attendance is very important. You may not miss more than three times for semester credit.
Call your supervisor when you are unable to attend—treat it as employment.
Cutting/Leaving Early: It is a privilege to take this class. If you cut this class entirely or in part, you will be removed from the class and forfeit credit for the class. No excuses, no second chances. IF A PROBLEM ARISES, CALL ME. Make me aware of any problems you may be having ASAP so that the matter can be resolved. The SHS phone number is (864)886-4460.
Unable to Attend Site: If you have a legitimate reason for not going to your site, you are expected to contact your supervisor AHEAD of TIME except in the case of a true emergency. When you sign in, see Dr. Dennis and if you need to, you may call your site from the office. When you sign in, you are to write the reason for not going to your site on the Sign-In sheet. Then you are to report to the Media Center and record your attendance in the Service Learning Notebook. You must make up the time missed on your own. This should not happen frequently. You are never to go home because you could not go to your site. If you have not informed Dr. Dennis of not reporting to your site, it will be counted as an absence or CUT. Be sure to have the receptionist in the front office or Mrs. Cannon in Guidance call for Dr. Dennis if the need arises.
Transportation: You must provide your own transportation. You are only allowed to ride with someone else when both students provide documentation from parents or guardians granting permission to do so. Riding with someone or allowing someone to ride with you without permission will result in immediate removal from the class. Show your Integrity by reporting directly to your service site and returning to SHS on time . . . stopping by your house, a store or restaurant is not allowed. If you cannot drive, we will place you at SHS.
Out of School Suspensions and/or repeated discipline infractions will be grounds for removal from Service Learning. Students withdrawn from Service Learning earn a WF with a final grade of 51.
