 Course Description:  Students are introduced to a language and culture relevant to today’s world. Conversations based on everyday situations and activities of young people build a large, practical vocabulary.  This course provides the fundamentals of pronunciation, grammar, basic vocabulary, and sentence structure.

Required Materials: Textbook, a sleeved folder, notebook, and a writing utensil, dry-erase marker (NOT RED OR YELLOW) and red or green pen.

Major Grades = 60%

The lowest quiz grade will be dropped at the end of each nine weeks.

Major Projects will have a detailed rubric and a set due date.  Projects will be graded with a penalty if turned in late.

Tests may be retaken according to SDOC and departmental guidelines.

• Academic Assistance

Help is available every day before or after school. There will be a weekly tutorial schedule posted in or outside of the classroom. Faculty meetings and other scholastic obligations may interfere from time to time, so please see weekly tutoring schedule. 

• Homework Guidelines

Homework is assigned to provide students with additional practice opportunities or to reinforce content and skills taught in class by the teacher.  However, daily studying is expected and is necessary for success in the foreign language classroom.  Please plan to study 10-15 minutes a day 5 days a week.

•  Make-up Work Procedures

Students are expected to make up work that they have missed.  After an absence, it shall be the duty of the student to contact the teacher to make arrangements for making up work within two (2) class periods or two (2) school days.

Students who are absent one day (lawful or unlawful) should be prepared to fulfill any previously assigned work on the day they return to class.  In addition, students should check CANVAS to acquire any work they missed.

Students who have longer term absences (more than one day) should notify the teacher immediately upon returning to school to set up a schedule for making up the missed work at the teacher’s discretion as well as use CANVAS to make up work. This includes student absences due to suspension. 

Students missing major grades may be assigned In School Suspension until work is satisfactorily completed.

 Communication Plan & Teacher Webpage Info:

Students are encouraged to login into CANVAS on a daily basis to download content videos and view assignments. Students should expect to use CANVAS daily to contact teacher, find assignments, agenda and other resources. Parents may also use CANVAS to see all of the above and to contact the teacher.     

Students will also be given major project assignments on CANVAS, which will include the rubric on how they will be graded.

In addition, current pacing guides, quiz dates, test dates, due dates, etc. can be found on CANVAS too.

Classroom Behavior Expectations and Consequences

Students will be expected to follow ALL school and district rules listed in the student handbook in addition to the following school-wide classroom rules.

 Restroom Policy – Students should use the restroom between classes to keep loss of instructional time to a minimum.If students must use the restroom during class, they must sign out on a google form to go to the restroom individually.  Students with a medical necessity for restroom use should bring a note from the doctor and turn it in to Guidance.

 Technology Devices & Laptops – Electronic devices are encouraged to be used in an educational manner only during class. The use of CANVAS is a requirement for class.

 Classroom Participation – Participation is an integral part of the language learning experience, students must be attempting to use the target language as they gain the necessary understanding. As the school year progresses the expectation will progress as well. Participation is a daily grade based on the student speaking, listening and using the target language.
