Introduction to Horticulture
Course Number: 5650, 5651
The courses in Introduction to Horticulture include organized subject matter and practical experiences related to the culture of plants used principally for ornamental or aesthetic purposes. Instruction emphasizes knowledge and understanding of the importance of establishing, maintaining, and managing ornamental horticulture enterprises.
Typical instructional activities include hands-on experiences with propagating, growing, establishing, and maintaining nursery plants and greenhouse crops; tissue culture techniques; designing landscapes; preparing designs; sales analysis and management; participating in personal and community leadership development activities; planning and implementing a relevant school-to-work transition experience; and participating in FFA activities.

- OCCUPATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES IN ORNAMENTAL HORTICULTURE
- Identify a minimum of five occupations in ornamental horticulture that interest you.

- Calculate within five percent the amount of materials needed in a given area.

- List the functions of the leaves, stems, roots, and flowers.
- Label the parts of a complete flower.

- List four vegetative means of reproducing plants from above ground parts.
- Describe the process of photosynthesis in basic terms.

- Prepare a planting calendar for selected green-house crops.
- Select and prepare a recommended media for a seed flat to germinate bedding plants, including sterilization or treatment as needed.
- Demonstrate the ability to seed a flat or indivi-dual container using recommended procedures.
- Transplant selected bedding plant crop using recommended procedures.
K. TURFGRASS ESTABLISHMENT AND MAINTENANCE
- Select a recommended turfgrass variety for given use and climate conditions from the following list: fescue, rye, centipede, bermuda, zoysia, and St. Augustine.
- Demonstrate the ability to seed, sod, or sprig a selected turfgrass area using recommended procedures.
L. LANDSCAPING DESIGN
- Prepare a family needs analysis for a landscape design using recommended practices.
- Prepare a site analysis according to South Carolina Nursery Association (SCNA) standards.
- Interpret a scale drawing showing the proposed planting plan of the public area, private area, and service area of a home landscape.
M. LANDSCAPE ESTABLISHMENT AND MAINTENANCE
- List commonly used mulching materials.
- Plant selected shrubs, trees, and ground cover at a landscape site using recommended proce-dures.
N. COMPUTERS IN AGRICULTURE
- List steps in the proper care of equipment and materials.
- Perform power on/off or log on/off procedures.
- Use the keyboard and/or other input devices to operate the computer.
- Load and run programs.
- Identify the ways computers are used in agricultural business and industry.
O. LEADERSHIP/COMMUNICATION/FFA
- Lead a group discussion for five minutes.
- Identify qualities of successful leaders.
- Explain the relationship between communication and leadership.
- Identify three suggestions for improving each of the following skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking.
