The AP English Language and Composition course aligns to an introductory college-level rhetoric and writing curriculum,which requires students to develop evidence-based analytic and argumentative essays that proceed through several stages or drafts. Students evaluate, synthesize, and cite research to support their arguments.Throughout the course, students develop a personal style by making appropriate grammatical choices. Additionally, students read and analyze the rhetorical elements and their effects in non-fiction texts, including graphic images as forms of text, from many disciplines and historical periods.

There are no fees associated with this course.
The College Board lists the following desired outcomes for students enrolled in the AP Language and Composition Class.  Our class will strive to achieve the following competencies:
  • Read from a variety of historical periods and disciplines
  • Identify audience, purpose, and strategies in texts
  • Analyze the types of arguments that writers use
  • Write formally and informally for a variety of audiences
  • Write expository, analytical, and argumentative essays
  • Understand the individual writing process and the importance of revision
  • Recognize techniques in visual as well as verbal arguments
  • Synthesize ideas and information from various sources
  • Know how to interpret information presented in notes and citations
  • Use the conventions of standard written English
