Concert Band is a performing ensemble, designed for students who demonstrate intermediate technical skills on their instrument.  This course is designed to build on the foundational skills learned in middle school band.  Students will continue to develop musicianship, technique, and performance-related music theory skills in this course.  Students will study a varied repertoire of music ranging from grade levels II to IV.  Students should expect that some activities may occur outside of the regular class period.  Attendance at after-school rehearsals and performances is required. 

 

There are no prerequisites for this course. 
There are no fees associated with this course.

Standards:  Long-range learning and developmental goals were designed in conjunction with objectives and goals addressed in the National Standards for Music Education and the South Carolina Academic Standards for the Visual and Performing Arts.  The goals are designed to enhance a progressive course of study as students continue in the music program.

 

National Standards for Music Education

  1. Singing, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music
  2. Performing on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music
  3. Improvising melodies, variations, and accompaniments
  4. Composing and arranging music within specific guidelines
  5. Reading and notating music
  6. Listening to, analyzing, and describing music
  7. Evaluating music and music performances
  8. Understanding relationships between music, the other arts, and disciplines outside the arts
  9. Understanding music in relation to history and culture

 

 

South Carolina Academic Standards for Visual and Performing Arts

  • The national standards 1 and 2 are combined into the 2010 South Carolina standard 1: “Music Performance.” Indicators previously listed under the two national standards are now listed under two subheadings: “Singing” and “Performing on Instrument.”
  • The national standards 3, “Improvising,” and 4, “Composing and Arranging,” are combined into the new South Carolina standard 2, “Creating Music.”
  • The new South Carolina standard 3, “Music Literacy,” is comprised of indicators previously listed in the 2003 standard 5, “Reading and Notating.”
  • The national standards 6 and 7 are combined into the new South Carolina standard 4: “Critical Response to Music,” with indicators organized under the subheadings “Analyzing” and “Evaluating.”
  • The new South Carolina standard 5, “History and Culture,” correlates with the national standard 9, “Relating to History and Culture.”
  • The new South Carolina standard 6, “Making Connections,” correlates with the national standard 8, “Making Connections.”
