 The Cosmetology Program is designed to prepare the student to qualify for the state cosmetology licensing examination. The student receives training in the art and science of the care and beautification of hair, skin, and nails. The course of study includes scalp treatments, hair shaping, hair styling, setting, waving, hair coloring, shampoos and rinses. Care of the skin and nails includes manicuring, pedicuring, massage, facials, makeup application, and hair removal. Instruction in chemistry, bacteriology, and anatomy and physiology of the face, head, arms, and hands is incorporated by means of theory and of practical application on both mannequins and live models. Also included in the course of study is salon planning and management.

Scalp and Hair Treatments

  1. Analyze hair and scalp.
  2. Identify scalp disorders and diseases.
  3. Prescribe treatment for scalp and hair problems.
  4. Drape client for wet service.
  5. Demonstrate brushing techniques.
  6. Perform scalp treatment procedures.

 

Shampooing Procedures

  1. Select appropriate products for hair type and service.
  2. Perform a shampoo.
  3. Apply conditioner.

 

Hairstyling Procedures

  1. Demonstrate proper sectioning and parting for roller placement.
  2. Demonstrate proper roller placement and securing.
  3. Demonstrate the application of finger wave lotion or gel.
  4. Create a finger wave.
  5. Demonstrate types and effects of various pin curls.
  6. Combine use of finger waves and pin curls.
  7. Complete a hairstyle incorporating teasing and smoothing techniques.
  8. Create a hairstyle that compliments client’s facial features.

 

Thermal Hair Styling Techniques

  1. Drape client with a nonflammable cape.
  2. Demonstrate various thermal curl techniques.
  3. Demonstrate various thermal pressing techniques.

 

Blow Dry Styling Techniques

  1. Demonstrate blow drying techniques using various types of brushes.
  2. Apply products appropriate for service.
  3. Complete style with hair and scalp thoroughly dried.

 

Hair Shaping Techniques

  1. Identify materials and implements needed to perform different types of cuts.
  2. Identify sectioning techniques.
  3. Perform a 0-degree blunt cut.
  4. Perform a 45-degree graduated layer cut.
  5. Perform a 90-degree uniform layer cut.
  6. Perform a 180-degree increase layered cut.
  7. Cut a basic style using a razor.
  8. Perform texturizing techniques using various tools.
  9. Demonstrate a clipper cut.
  10. Identify types of haircuts.

 

Braiding, Braid Extensions, Wigs, and Hair Enhancements

  1. Demonstrate natural hair braiding.
  2. Identify extensions, wigs, and hair enhancements.
  3. Explain proper removal for extensions, wigs, and hair enhancements.
  4. Differentiate between human and synthetic hair, pieces, wigs, and hair enhancements.

Permanent Waves

  1. Perform a client consultation.
  2. Perform sectioning and blocking.
  3. Perform various perm wrap techniques.
  4. Demonstrate permanent wave applications.
  5. Differentiate between permanent wave solutions.

 

Chemical Relaxing

  1. Differentiate between sodium hydroxide and thioglycolate.
  2. Identify various relaxer application techniques.
  3. Demonstrate smoothing techniques.

 

 

Hair Coloring

  1. Drape and protect client.
  2. Demonstrate a predisposition test.
  3. Explain the Law of Color.
  4. Formulate color according to hair analysis.
  5. Demonstrate strand test.
  6. Apply temporary color.
  7. Apply semi-permanent color.
  8. Demonstrate a virgin and retouch application.
  9. Perform various highlighting and low lighting techniques.
  10. Demonstrate virgin and retouch lightener.

Manicure and Pedicure

  6. Perform specialized nail treatments.
  7. Demonstrate nail repair.
  8. Demonstrate hand, arm, leg, and foot massage.
  9. Apply nail enhancements.

 

Facial

  1. Perform client consultation.
  2. Drape client for facial procedure.
  3. Complete a basic facial.
  4. Demonstrate facial manipulations.
  5. Perform specialized facial treatments.

 

Hair Removal

  1. Identify methods of hair removal.
  2. Demonstrate various hair removal techniques.

 

Basic Makeup

  1. Drape client for make-up applications.
  2. Apply eyelash enhancements.

 

Anatomy and Physiology

  1. Identify bones of the face and head.
  2. Identify bones of the arm and hand.
  3. Identify muscles of the face and head.
  4. Distinguish between sensory and motor nerves.

 

Product Chemistry

  1. Distinguish between acids and bases.
  2. Distinguish between a suspension and an emulsion.
  3. Distinguish between organic and inorganic chemistry.
