German 1 introduces students to the language and culture of the German speaking world. Students will develop the ability to communicate in present tense in the target language, to speak and understand German at a basic level. Students will be able to talk about themselves, their families and friends, activities and school, and function in everyday situations. Students will be able to respond to questions on these topics as well. Students will begin to develop reading skills, using only authentic texts to identify cognates, context clues, and apply prior knowledge to extract meaning. Students will begin to develop writing skills using basic sentences.
Language Competencies
1. Interpretive Listening (IL) and Reading (IR)
Students can interpret information, concepts, and ideas from a variety of culturally authentic sources on a variety of topics.
2. Interpersonal Communication (IC)
Students can exchange information, concepts, and ideas with a variety of speakers or readers on a variety of topics in a culturally appropriate context.
3. Presentational Speaking (PS) and Writing (PW)
Students can present information, concepts, and ideas to an audience of listeners or readers on a variety of topics in a culturally appropriate context.
Intercultural Competencies
4. Investigation of Cultural Products and Practices (CPP)
Students can use their language skills to investigate the world beyond their immediate environment.
5. Understanding of Cultural Perspectives (CP)
Students can use their language skills to recognize and understand others’ ways of thinking as well as their own.
6. Participation in Cultural Interaction (CIA)
Students can use their language skills and cultural understanding to interact in a cultural context other than their own.
