Medical terminology is designed to develop in the students a working knowledge of the language of medicine. Students acquire word-building skills by learning prefixes, suffixes, roots, and abbreviations. Utilizing a body systems approach, the student will define, interpret, and pronounce medical terms relating to structure and function, pathology, diagnosis, clinical procedures, and pharmacology. Common abbreviations applicable to each system will be interpreted. Knowledge of medical terminology enhances a student’s ability to successfully secure employment or pursue advanced education in health science.
Foundation Standard 1: Academic Foundation
Healthcare professionals will know the academic subject matter required
for proficiency within their area. They will use this knowledge as needed in
their role.
The following accountability criteria are considered essential for students in a health science program of study.
Human Structure and Function
- Classify the basic structural and functional organization of the human body
(tissue, organ, and system).
- Recognize body planes, directional terms, quadrants, and cavities.
- Analyze the basic structure and function of the human body.
Diseases and Disorders
- Describe common diseases and disorders of each body system (prevention,
pathology, diagnosis, and treatment).
- Recognize emerging diseases and disorders.
- Investigate biomedical therapies as they relate to the prevention, pathology, and treatment of disease.
Foundation Standard 2: Communications
Healthcare professionals will know the various methods of giving and
obtaining information. They will communicate effectively, both orally and
in writing.
Medical Terminology
- Construct medical terms using prefixes, suffixes, roots, and combining forms.
- Use appropriate medical terms to communicate information.
- Identify medical abbreviations to communicate information.
- Determine definition of a medical term by examining its component word parts.
Concepts of Effective Communication
- Pronounce medical terms.
- Apply speaking and active listening skills.
- Interpret verbal communication.
Written Communication Skills
- Recognize elements of written and electronic communication (with emphasis on correct spelling, grammar, and formatting).
- Use medical dictionaries and multimedia resources to interpret medical terminology.
Required Instructional Materials and Resources: (List required materials including SDOC provided textbooks, including any fees that apply, etc.)
- TEXTBOOK: None – curriculum is online.
- FEES: $30.00 – must be paid in full prior to any student beginning labs (if student has lab coat from previous course, the fee is $20.00) This covers the cost of supplies for the course including lab journal, gloves, lab kits, etc.
- SUPPLIES: 3 ring 1 1/2” notebook – tabs which are labeled per unit as discussed in class. There will be a formal notebook check to make sure all notebooks are organized correctly.
