U.S. History and Constitution Honors

This course will focus on the major developments in the U.S. from the settlement of North America to the present. The course fulfills the U.S. History requirement of the state of South Carolina for high school graduation. In this course, students will develop a command of the basic facts and continuing themes of the history of the United States. It is essential that the student be committed to working consistently and diligently to develop his/her factual understanding as well as analytical, interpretive, and writing skills. Methods for instruction in this class include class and small group discussions, examination of primary sources, lecture, critical reading, research, and presentations.

All students will take the SC End of Course Exam which determines 20% of their final grade.

    Standard USHC-1: The student will demonstrate an understanding of the conflicts between
    regional and national interest in the development of democracy in the United States.

    Standard USHC-2: The student will demonstrate an understanding of how economic
    developments and the westward movement impacted regional differences and democracy in
    the early nineteenth century.

    Standard USHC-3: The student will demonstrate an understanding of how regional and
    ideological differences led to the Civil War and an understanding of the impact of the Civil War
    and Reconstruction on democracy in America.

    Standard USHC-4: The student will demonstrate an understanding of the industrial
    development and the consequences of that development on society and politics during the
    second half of the nineteenth and the early twentieth centuries.

    Standard USHC-5: The student will demonstrate an understanding of domestic and foreign
    developments that contributed to the emergence of the United States as a world power in the
    twentieth century.

    Standard USHC-6: The student will demonstrate an understanding of the conflict between
    traditionalism and progressivism in the 1920s and the economic collapse and the political
    response to the economic crisis in the 1930s.

    Standard USHC-7: The student will demonstrate an understanding of the impact of World War
    II on the United States and the nation’s subsequent role in the world.

    Standard USHC-8: The student will demonstrate an understanding of social, economic and
    political issues in contemporary America.
